Visitors to Alan and Jean Powell’s business at
Wackley near Burlton, Shrewsbury are absolutely amazed by the sight that greets
them…a magnificent sculptured stag, classic statues, garden ornaments,
architectural antiques and property bygones galore! Alan and Jean are specialists in architectural
salvage and together with their son Shaun, who is also a director, they are
celebrating six years of successful business. In fact the business is
expanding so fast that a new display area is being constructed which will show
what are described as “period pieces” to their best effect.
Artefacts are purchased in line with a strict code of practice to ensure that items offered
for sale are legitimate. The business has a high conservation ethic and
building materials that were once thrown away are now reclaimed and conserved.
The storerooms are a delight to anyone restoring a property, particularly a
building of character.
A variety of architectural styles greet you, with a
host of unusual and decorative items featuring Victorian, Art deco, neo-classic
and baroque masterpieces. It is well worth a visit to enjoy a wonderful
opportunity to see authentic replicas of historic and classic sculptures that
are now housed in international museums. For example there is an exquisite
statue of The Apollo Belvedere taken from the
original dating from around the 2nd century AD and also an English
composition stone font. This would be a must for lovers of Victorian Gothic
revival with its deep relief and hexagonal façade with blind tracery,
quatrefoils and trefoils.
North Shropshire Reclamation & Antique Salvage is the name of the business. A long title but
one that exactly describes the type of service offered to architects and
builders, people renovating or restoring their property, interior designers and
indeed anyone who loves quirky features for their home or garden.
There is something for everyone with items to complement
any period and architectural style- with artefacts having been brought to this
delightful part of Shropshire- from churches and colleges, pubs and prisons to
banks and building societies! Their premises are full of slates, bricks, sinks,
baths, doors, stained glass, fireplaces, chimney pots, chandeliers, cartwheels
and doorknobs.
In fact everything from a lion’s head to the proverbial kitchen sink!
Alan and Jean are keen to preserve the unique
character of the nation’s heritage. Alan said: - “Of course it goes without
saying that we enjoy our business. As architectural specialists we love the
quality, craftsmanship and design of yesterday’s craftsmen. We would like to
believe that we are restoring and saving the nation’s heritage for future
generations".
